And Pat was in labor . . .

A long time ago, Steve and I lived in an efficiency apartment in Dinky Town. It had a very small kitchen with yellow walls and one of those old wooden cabinets for our food and dishes - a hoosier.

Anyway, I decided it needed a little redecorating. It was Pat and Aunt Liz who came to my rescue. I bought red brick contact paper and with their help, we put it on the lower half of the walls. Part way through the process, Pat announced she was in labor! Did they leave? No, they continued to work on the walls - until the job was done. I was so concerned that Pat would have the baby in our kitchen, but I was wrong. This is the way I remember it. What do you think, Pat?

Ahhh, another bragging-rights item that came from my home state! Yes, I'm from the other "I" state - Indiana, the Hoosier state (but don't ask me how it became known as THAT! :)

Thanks Donna, for gathering & sharing all that history on those kitchen cabinets, and the evolvement of the Efficiently Modern Kitchen!

(sorry 'bout that...)

This is my take on that evening. I remember the apartment being small and cute. It was an efficiency and I think you guys had a pullout couch that you slept on in the living room. I remember putting the contact paper (it was not wallpaper) and part way through I kept going to the bathroom feeling like I really had to go but nothing would happen. This continued for about 45 minutes and probably 15 trips to the bathroom and it was my mom who said "I think you are going into labor." I was surprised and thought to myself "well-there is no turning back now." There was no pain at all (not at that time anyway)--just the very uncomfortable feeling of having to urinate but not being able to. Also that would have been Mom's birthday that day. I do remember you being anxious about it and wanting me to get going. I probably was in denial that this was really happening. Oh--I do not remember the Hoosier cabinet which surprises me because I love them. Do you have pictures of that apartment? Also--that was over 44 years ago.

Yes, your description is accurate. Do you remember we shared a bathroom in the hallway with two other apartments? We were poor, college students.

I don't think I have any photos, but the hoosier was painted white. And you're right - it was probably 44 years ago. Steve and I were married 45 years ago today.
